Tornado/Hurricane Watches & Warnings

Many people get confused over the difference between a watch and a warning (be it for a hurricane or a tornado). So just remember, a watch always comes before a warning. A watch means that weather conditions are ideal for the development of a hurricane or a tornado, but that one has not yet formed. A warning means that a tornado or hurricane has definitely formed, been observed and is exerting its destructive force. During a watch, you should be on your guard (hint: Think "guard watch"). During a warning, you should take cover. There are ways for you to lessen the devastation felt by you and your family.

Hurricane watch -- Weather conditions are well-suited for the formation of a hurricane; or a hurricane has formed but the authorities are unsure as to whether or not it will strike a particular area.

Hurricane warning -- A hurricane is imminent. Generally, the hurricane will strike the area in 24 hours. Evacuation may be necessary (if recommended by the proper authorities).
