Farmers Customer Care Vehicle
open Lockheed fire victims
A Farmers Customer Care Vehicle (CCV)
has been deployed to help victims of the “Lockheed fire” burning near
Bonny Doon, in an unincorporated part of Santa Cruz County, California.
The CCV is located in front of agent Michael Burns’ office at 6230
Highway 9 in Felton. Local claims adjusters are staffing the CCV to
answer customers’ insurance questions and help them file claims.
“The CCV will stay open until 7 p.m. and remain here until the
evacuation orders are lifted,” says district manager Hugh Seagreaves.
“Right now, about 2,000 people have been evacuated, and we’re letting
them know that Farmers is here to help. I’ve been to the two evacuation
sites to make sure the people know that Farmers is here. We have signs
and posters posted at each site, too.”
Here are the
evacuation sites located in Davenport and Santa Cruz:
- Pacific
School
- 50 Ocean Street
- Davenport, CA
- Red
Cross site at Vintage Church
- 350 Mission Street (intersection of Highland and Mission
- Santa
Cruz, CA
Farmers Catastrophe Corps’ Logistics
team continues to monitor the Lockheed fire, which has burned 4,100
acres and is currently 5 percent contained. It’s burning about nine
miles north of Santa Cruz, and eight miles from Felton, in a mountainous
area of heavily wooded, rugged terrain. There aren’t many homes in the
area, but the dry vegetation and brush offer plenty of fuel for the fire
to spread.
If the fire grows, Logistics is prepared. The Mobile Claims Center bus
(MCC) is on standby in Southern California, ready to deploy if
needed. 19 claims representatives and one mid-loss adjuster are also
available for deployment. Additional resources will be mobilized if
needed.

FARMERS INSURANCE PREPARED FOR HURRICANE IKE’S ARRIVAL
FARMERS
INSURANCE PREPARED FOR HURRICANE IKE’S ARRIVAL. No Byline.
GuidryNews.com (Galveston, TX). 2008/9/10. Farmers Insurance Group®
of Companies, including subsidiaries Foremost Insurance and Bristol
West, are prepared for deployment to help customers once Hurricane Ike
hits landfall in Texas by this weekend. "Ike has completed its
destructive path through Cuba and is now in the open waters of the Gulf
and heading for landfall along the Texas Gulf coast," notes Paul Quinn,
Assistant Vice President of Claims Communications for Farmers Insurance.
"We will strategically position claims adjusters and Farmers mobile
catastrophe units near where the hurricane makes landfall." Farmers is
equipped with Mobile Catastrophe Claims buses that are 45’ long and are
equipped with state-of-the art satellite communications equipment; can
support up to 70 adjusters working on line at any given time; water,
supplies; laptop and telephone capability for use by our customers and
public; and a built in grill to serve meals to Farmers’ customers and
others in need. "Our Customer Care Claims Vehicles are smaller versions
of our Mobile buses and are ready to assist with claims and supply needs
of customers and others in need. Farmers will be available to help in
anyway we can," Quinn said. Farmers Insurance advises its customers in
Ike’s projected path to pay close attention to the latest weather
reports and begin making necessary preparations, including: Create a
Home Inventory. Have an up-to-date inventory of all of your personal
property. Take pictures and then email them to relatives living out of
state. A home inventory will help you replace your belongings faster.
Prepare an Evacuation Plan. Plan ahead and map out a safe and smooth
evacuation route, and please follow any evacuation orders. Also, have
all prescriptions and important papers readily available in case you
have to leave your home on short notice. It is also a good idea to have
emergency supplies such as flashlights, radio, batteries and water on
hand if you live in a hurricane prone area."Something we stress is that
Farmers, Foremost or Bristol West customers should not go back to their
homes too soon after evacuation, or not to go back for insurance
information when they have been told to leave," Quinn continued. "They
should put that information on a card or in a folder so they can grab it
as they leave. Once a storm hits:Farmers Insurance customers with
damage should immediately contact their agent or call Farmers’
24-hour-claims hotline, 1-800-HelpPoint® (1-800-435-7764) for
immediate assistance.Foremost Insurance customers should file their

by calling: 1- 800-274-7865.Flood victims who have flood insurance
should contact the National Flood Program at www.floodsmart.gov.org .
Farmers Insurance catastrophe response personnel including claims
adjusters and volunteers were scattered among cities in the Gulf Coast
ready to assist residents. And the decision to send them originated from
Olathe. Jerry Davies, a Farmers spokesman at the company’s Los Angeles
headquarters said employees located at the company’s national claims
facility in Olathe monitor weather using state-of-the-art satellite
equipment to deploy resources when disasters strike "at a moment’s
notice." Weather forecasters predicted the storm headed for the Gulf
Coast would be a category 5 hurricane, and could cause damage similar to
to what was inflicted when Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. Gustav
lost steam and was a category 2 when it made shore, but agents must be
prepared for the worst. With the advance notice, Farmers was able to
send resources to set up staging areas, outside of the danger area, but
close enough so claims adjusters and catastrophe personnel can get to
the area quickly. Shawn Kitts, a field support manager for Farmers, led a
caravan a week ago Sunday morning of catastrophe response team members
the more than 500 mile trek from Olathe to Tyler, Texas in preparation
for Gustav. The caravan included Kitts and his seven-person team, two
mobile claims centers — 45-foot buses equipped with satellite
communications equipment, supplies and built in bbq grills — three
customer care vehicles — smaller versions of the buses — and two more
trailers filled with supplies. Davies said the buses provide resources
for more to just the 3,000 or so Farmers customers affected by the
hurricane, but to anyone who needs it. He said Greensburg residents
waited in line in the rain to use the bus’ satellite telephones to
contact family members when the tornado struck last summer. And, Davies
said, the built-in grills fed 1,500 people a day at Qualcomm Stadium in
San Diego last fall when when wildfires displaced southern California
residents. Kitts and his team set up their staging area in Tyler, about
350 miles from Baton Rouge, La. He said others were located in Dallas,
Shreveport, La., and Jackson, Miss. Kitts, who’s responsible for
organizing and coordinating on-ground support for events, sent two
members of his team to Baton Rouge last Tuesday after Gustav came ashore
the day before. The buses and other vehicles from the caravan followed
Wednesday. Kitts set up a point of contact for the community, which
allowed people to file claims, use the phone or get something to eat and
drink. Fortunately Gustav was lost steam. Kitts said the damage wasn’t
severe, but it was significant. Insured losses from Gustav were
estimated between $4 million and $10 million, according to Risk
Management Solutions. That paled in comparison to the $41 million in
damage inflicted by Katrina. "We’re at a good place with this event,"
Kitts said. "We spend a week preparing for all issues and when it
actually occurs we’re ready. It’s always a good feeling two or three
days in when everything is working as it was intended." Kitts said about
130 Farmers employees assisted with Gustav relief, but more than 375
were available. "Olathe is the hub and the center for the logistics, all
the coordination, planning and response, but one thing important to us
is the entire company steps up," he said. "People from all departments
and all areas of the company make themselves available in these times."
Kitts said they stick around as long as they’re needed after a storm.
They usually return home after power is fully restored, but with
Tropical Storm Hannah and Hurricane Ike looming, they’re now staging for
the next wave of relief wherever those may strike.

H1N1 "Swine" Flu Update - Published by Assemblyman
Michael D. Duvall (R-72)
H1N1 "Swine" Flu Update
Health professionals are moving quickly to respond to outbreaks of H1Ni
or "Swine Flu" in different parts of the world, including Mexico,
Scotland and the United States. Cases of swine flu have been confirmed
right here in southern California in Orange, Los Angeles, Imperial, San
Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
As of May 6, 2009, California has 106 confirmed and 169 probable H1N1
Influenza cases (275 total). 12 of these cases were reported as being
hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported in California. There
have been two deaths in Texas. Most confirmed cases of H1N1 in the
United States remain mild.
Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs that does not normally affect
humans, but human infections can and do happen, sometimes with deadly
results. In Mexico – one of the epicenters of the latest outbreak – as
many as 149 people have already been killed. Although nearly all of the
cases reported in the United States have resulted in a clean bill of
health, in two cases the patients have died, so it is extremely
important that everyone remain vigilant about their personal health
situation and possible exposure to this disease.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have determined that
this outbreak is contagious and is spreading from person to person from
direct contact. You cannot get swine flu from eating pork or pork
products. The symptoms of swine flu are similar to regular human flu and
include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills and fatigue. If
you live in an area where swine flu has been positively identified and
you have flu-like symptoms, you may want to contact your health care
provider to determine whether testing or treatment is needed.
To protect yourself and contain the spread of swine flu in California,
here are some common-sense steps that you can take right now:
- Cover
your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw
the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often
with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Try to avoid
close contact with sick people.
- If you get sick with flu,
health professionals recommend that you stay home from work or school
and limit contact with others to avoid infecting them.

the latest updates on swine flu, please visit the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention website at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/ or the

Wildfire destroys more than 100 California homes
Wildfire
destroys more than 100 California homes By Liz Robbins Friday, November
14, 2008 A fast-moving wildfire raced overnight and into the morning
through the California hill town of Montecito, a popular hideaway for
celebrities near Santa Barbara. The fire, the worst in the area in 30
years, destroyed more than 100 houses, along with a dormitory and
several other buildings at Westmont College. At least 13 people were
injured and more than 5,000 were evacuated, local officials said. At
daybreak Friday, firefighters were trying to contain the blaze, which
was spread to more than 2,500 acres by 70-mile-an-hour winds overnight.
Although the winds had died down to 15 miles an hour by morning, the
weather forecast for later Friday called for warm temperatures, low
humidity and rising winds, which would make the fire harder to contain.
The injured included at least two firefighters, but none were students
at Westmont, a small Christian liberal arts college, according to the
Associated Press. "There's imminent threat to many structures, and still
an imminent threat within 24 and 48 hours," said Jackie Jenkins, a
spokeswoman for the Montecito Fire Protection District. A total of 1,141
people were deployed to fight the fire as of Friday morning, she said. A
number of well-known entertainers own homes in the area, including
Oprah Winfrey. "I can tell you for sure that Oprah's house is safe, and
so is Rob Lowe's," Jenkins said. She said she The blaze is being called
the Tea Fire because it started in a local park called the Tea Garden.
The most concentrated damage so far has occurred on the Westmont campus,
which covers about 111 acres in the hills near Montecito and has about
1,000 students. The college was caught off guard by the rapidly moving
flames, according to the Associated Press. "It came pretty fast," Tyler
Rollema, a 19-year-old sophomore told the agency. She said she first
heard of the fire when she was eating dinner Thursday evening in the
cafeteria and students were told to head for the gym immediately. "We
came out, and it was just blazing." Some of the injured were being
treated for burns and smoke inhalation at the Santa Barbara Cottage
Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman, Janet O'Neil, told the Associated
Press. The fire started because of "sundowner" winds, unique to the area
of Santa Barbara County, and named because of the time of day when they
occur. The "sundowners" (a variation of Santa Ana winds) are winds that
race down the slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains toward the ocean
around nightfall. Their dangerous force on Thursday sent embers flying
that showed no discretion in causing damage, from a college dorm to
luxury homes.

Through its Ready Campaign, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security educates
and empowers Americans to take some simple steps to prepare for and respond to
potential emergencies, including natural disasters and terrorist attacks. Ready
asks individuals to do three key things: get an emergency supply kit, make a
family emergency plan, and be informed about the different types of emergencies
that could occur and their appropriate responses.
All Americans should have some basic supplies on hand in order to survive for at
least three days if an emergency occurs. Following is a listing of some basic items that every emergency supply kit should include. However, it is important
that individuals review this list and consider where they live and the unique
needs of their family in order to create an emergency supply kit that will meet
hese needs. Individuals should also consider having at least two emergency
supply kits, one full kit at home and smaller portable kits in their workplace,
vehicle or other places they spend time.
