About Me

2006 - Present 
Farmers Insurance Group, Ruth Stroup Agency

Located in Oakland, we serve a diverse clientele.  We have clients from all over the world from every walk of life.  And our homes are as unique as the people who live in them.   

I became an agent for three reasons:   
  • To build a local business, serving local clients and giving back to the community I call home. 
  • To provide an essential financial service** without jargon, hype or sales pressure.
  • To provide world-class service, because I wanted it and figured my friends, colleagues and neighbors did too.  

1995-2005 
Financial Professional

Working at a discount brokerage firm, I saw firsthand how hungry people were for financial information, and how much they appreciated having someone to talk to when they had questions.  When information and resources became available online, I found that people still needed help with things like setting goals and understanding their risk tolerance, because these topics are personal, and talking to someone helps people create solutions that are right for their situation. 

This experience shaped the way I run my agency. My goal is always to provide useful and timely information that will help you when you make informed financial decisions.  Insurance is one of the foundations of a strong financial strategy; this is one of the reasons I decided to open my agency.

Oakland, CA - Mills College BA History

1988-1991

As a history major, our senior thesis required us to write from "original source materials."  I chose to write about the impact of WW2 on the East Bay community and spent countless hours in the Oakland Library History Room and the Bancroft Library Rare Books room.  To this day, I love learning about our community and all the people who make this place unique. 

Hyde Park, NY - Culinary Institute of America

1980-81

Training to be a chef taught me about the importance of managing expenses, workflow and organization.  In the hospitality industry, you make your reputation by creating positive client experiences.  At the agency, we help our clients navigate all aspects of the insurance process from quoting to underwriting to policy transfer and finally to claims.  We call this concierge service, and it's one of the ways we make the make the client experience special at our agency.
